What Happened to Draco Malfoy After Harry Potter?

What Happened to Draco Malfoy After Harry Potter?

Draco Malfoy is easily one of the most popular supporting characters in the Harry Potter franchise. Although Draco was initially portrayed as something of a stock character — the hero's school bully — he grew in complexity across the seven books and ended up as a nuanced and complicated figure. Still, while he undergoes something of a redemption arc, Draco never completes a full 180-degree turn to join forces with Harry as an ally.

Because of that, there's a sense that Draco's story is not finished by the time The Deathly Hallows ends, and the glimpse we receive of an adult Draco in the final book's closing flashforward scene has always fascinated fans. For years, that was the last we saw of the character, but at this point, we know much more about Draco's adult life than we used to, including his marriage, fatherhood, and the tragic loss that he suffered.

Draco's adult life was finally explored in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which features him in a major role. The Cursed Child centers on Albus Severus Potter, Harry's second son, who is shockingly sorted into Slytherin House at Hogwarts and forms a close friendship with none other than Scorpius Malfoy, Draco's only child. Ironically, Draco is closer to his son than Harry is to Albus, with the latter harboring a lot of resentment towards his father as he feels he can never escape his shadow and live up to the great Harry Potter's reputation.

In contrast, Draco is clearly a much more loving father to Scorpius than Lucius Malfoy was to him, and Scorpius displays none of the bigotry or prejudiced views that Draco did at his age. This is likely due in part to Astoria Greengrass, Draco's wife and Scorpius' mother. Like Draco, Astoria hailed from an old pure-blood wizarding family, but she rejected her parents' beliefs in blood purity after the Second Wizarding War. Unfortunately, something she could not help but inherit from her family was a hereditary blood curse that was destined to kill her before she reached old age. Sure enough, Astoria died during Scorpius' third year at school.

Draco was known to love his wife very dearly, and when she struggled to conceive — likely due to her blood curse — he encouraged her to put her own health first above having a child. It probably helped that Draco was also keen to spite his now-disgraced father, Lucius, who wanted a grandchild to continue the Malfoy bloodline. By this point, Draco was estranged from his parents, as they weren't exactly approving of him marrying someone with such progressive views as Astoria.

Astoria, however, was determined to have a child so that Draco would not be alone once she eventually passed away from her illness. The couple were ultimately able to conceive, but Astoria's pregnancy did indeed have the feared negative effect on her health, and she lived most of the rest of her life in seclusion (excepting her trip to see Scorpius off to Hogwarts for the first time, as seen in The Deathly Hallows).

The Malfoys' troubles with conceiving were apparently well-known, as pernicious rumors followed Scorpius during his early years at Hogwarts. There had long been gossip that Voldemort survived his final death at Harry's hand, and the rumor went that Scorpius was actually the Dark Lord's child and heir, merely adopted and raised by the Malfoys. Even Harry, whose scar had begun to hurt again, was swayed by these rumors, which only exacerbated his estrangement from Albus.

The biggest thing fans were asking about Draco after The Deathly Hallows' flashforward is whether he and Harry ever became friends. After all, they share an awkward nod at Platform 9 and 3/4 that suggests much of their old animosity is behind them. In The Cursed Child, however, a confluence of factors ensures that the duo's old rivalry flares back up even as they have to work together to save their children.
