Some movies justify their lengthy runtime by cramming as much story as possible into every minute, while others are so immersive that the passage of time becomes almost irrelevant. The vibrant biopic ultimately follows his transformation from Malcolm Little into one of the most important figures in American history, ending with his assassination in 1965. At 202 minutes, it's an enormous amount of life to cover in a single movie, and it's a deeply human portrait of the celebrated figure.
Even still, Malcolm X rarely feels like a three-and-a-half-hour biopic because Spike Lee gives each stage of Malcolm's life its own identity. The movie constantly evolves as its protagonist does, shifting from crime drama to prison story to religious awakening to political and personal drama. Denzel Washington's commanding performance gives Malcolm X a strong emotional anchor, while Lee's direction ensures that even the historical material feels immediate. Rather than racing through and checking the boxes of important events, Malcolm X unfolds an entire life, so its lengthy runtime feels surprisingly natural.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is one of the most iconic and beloved fantasy movies of all time, and for good reason. Peter Jackson's 2001 film follows Frodo Baggins after he inherits the One Ring and leaves the Shire to begin his journey across Middle-earth, alongside Hobbits, Men, an Elf, Dwarves, and a wizard. Their mission is to get to Mordor and destroy the One Ring before Sauron's forces can reclaim it, and while the theatrical cut details this journey for 178 minutes, the extended edition is considerably longer.
The Fellowship of the Ring had a tall task as the first movie of the trilogy, but it managed to translate Tolkien's impressive world-building to the screen without making the audience feel like they were doing homework. There's always another character to become invested in, another place to discover, or another threat around the corner, so three hours quickly disappear.
The Raid 2 picks up immediately after the bloody apartment raid, and this time, rookie Jakarta police officer Rama goes deep undercover within the city's most ruthless criminal syndicate to protect his family. He assumes a hardened identity in prison and infiltrates the mob by befriending the boss's unstable son in order to expose the corruption between the police department and criminal gangs. The sprawling battle eventually involves rival criminal factions, personal betrayals, and Rama's increasingly dangerous attempt to expose the people responsible.
