A new Minecraft update unlocks the Ice Caves biome, where you’ll find frozen Zombies, deadly Icicles, and the freezing status effect.
A new Minecraft update has just opened the doors to its latest biome, and I hope you've packed your parka. Mojang's latest Minecraft Java Snapshot and Bedrock Preview builds are here to start testing for the fourth Game Drop of 2026, and that means it's time to check out the sandbox game's newest biome, the Ice Caves. Down in the frosty depths you'll find the unique Frostbite Zombies, along with the other deadly threats such as Ice Balls and Icicles. Manage to dodge them, however, and you can make the new Freezing Potion and Arrows to match.
We got our first glimpse of the Ice Caves during September's Minecraft Live, and while the reveal might have been somewhat overshadowed by news of the new Sift dimension coming in 2027, this frosty underground biome deserves attention. It's a gorgeous region that can be generated in the caves under colder overground areas. It's primarily built of Packed Ice and Calcite blocks, with Snow patches dotted across the ground.
There's no natural Dirt or Granite to be found there, though you'll find a fairly large amount of valuable ore deposits that are embedded in pockets of Stone and Deepslate. Ice Crystals can spawn on Packed Ice blocks and act as the only natural source of light, although they'll break like Torches if the block they're attached to is removed. Icicles will line the ceilings, and if exposed to too much light they'll have a chance to drop, damaging anything they fall on.
Standard cave mobs can be found there, though you're most likely to find Strays (the frosty Skeleton variant) and the new frozen Zombie type, called Frostbites. These are melee fighters by default but can spawn carrying Ice Balls, a projectile that they can throw your way. These deal up to four damage, but scale down based on their speed, and will break when they hit something.
While the projectiles are annoying, it's the Frostbites' up-close attacks you'll want to be wary of, because they apply the new Freezing effect, which causes you to slowly become frozen. This makes you shake, reduces your jump height, and can eventually deal damage - you can mitigate this by wearing Leather Armor, although it won't prevent or remove the effect entirely.
You can also get your hands on Ice Balls by defeating Frostbites, and these can then be combined with Awkward Potions to craft the new Potion of Freezing. This also supports the lingering and splashing variants, and can be put into a Cauldron to create a brew that makes Arrows of Freezing. Applying this new status to mobs will cause them to take additional damage from it, and this is a whopping five times stronger against mobs that are vulnerable to it.
The Minecraft Ice Caves are available now via the Java Snapshot and Bedrock Preview builds. Switch over via the launcher, and be sure you've got the 'Drop 4 of 2026' experimental toggle enabled if you want to give the new biome and its features a try.
