Ahead of the release of Minecraft on the Switch 2 this October, Mojang has announced changes are coming to how you spend Minecoins purchased on Nintendo platforms and cross-play.

Starting 27th October 2026 (Minecraft's Switch 2 launch date), 'Minecoins' purchased on Nintendo platforms will only be available to use on those systems (Switch or Switch 2). Minecoins purchased on another device can no longer be used on Minecraft Marketplace purchases on Nintendo devices as of the same date.

Any virtual currency (aka Minecoins) you own before this date will be transferred to a Legacy Wallet, and can continue to be used across platforms. There is no expiry date on these Minecoins, but "they will get used up first" when making transactions.

Mojang also notes how retail cards may no longer support Nintendo devices, and notes to "look for the platforms listed on the packaging to ensure the card supports where you intend to play". The same applies when purchasing Minecoin cards.

Once again, Minecraft launches for the Switch 2 this October. Mojang has also confirmed there will be a digital upgrade path for existing Switch players. If we hear anything else about the upcoming changes to Minecoins on Nintendo platforms or the Switch 2 version, we'll provide an update.
