While Dawntrail's reception within the global Final Fantasy XIV community stands as relatively mixed, the white-hot buzz around Evercold and the beautiful yet ominous world of the Fourth is already helping the next expansion shape up to be one of the game's most highly-anticipated ones yet. Thanks to the series of graphic-related updates injected throughout Dawntrail's patch cycle, FF14 is now set to undergo a massive gameplay overhaul with Evercold's release, truly bringing the MMO into its next big era.
However, the hopes and dreams for Evercold don't just lie in those more technical updates. Two Fanfest keynotes worth of information have set the stage for what is increasingly looking like the game's most ambitious expansion to date, one that may finally even give the highly-acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion a run for its money after sitting alone at the top for so long.
However, those keynotes have still left a number of hanging threads that players eagerly want answered, and normally we'd have to wait until the finale keynote in Tokyo to get any further inkling about where we're heading next in our adventure as the Warrior of Light. However, as it turns out, the final chunk of MSQ provided with the game's 7.56 patch update has given us not just a few hints of what to expect in the Fourth, but a full-on preliminary experience with a trove of lore about this frigid world straight from Visna herself.

After making her grand debut in the second version of the reveal trailer for Evercold at Fanfest, Visna's identity and purpose in the expansion was kept largely underwraps, with Yoshi-P simply telling us to hang tight until later in the year. However, that didn't stop the community at large from putting her few seconds on the big screen under a microscope. From the strange glowing tool she held up to the sky, to the falcon-type pet she interacted with, and a mysterious rune symbol that appeared in front of her during that interaction.
This all had players scrambling to put two and two together about the planned Physical Ranged DPS job for the expansion, with Bastion's big reveal as the Tank job now out of the way. Speculations immediately circled around something akin to a Ranger or Falconer, and composer Masayoshi Soken only fueled those rumors at a dev panel during the same Fanfest by playing sound effects that he claimed were from the new job. What stood out most prominently was the screech of what sounded very much like a bird creature.
