Hey kid, you want a free remaster? It's totally not a scam! No, really. While everyone knew The Witcher 3's sort of surprise new expansion Songs of the Past would be getting a look-in at Geoff: German Edition, CD Projekt Red had another surprise up their sleeve in the form of a full-on remaster of The Witcher 3, which is coming as a free update next month.
Specifically it's arriving September 29th, and brings with it a bevy of changes. For starters, there's that thing you see in every remaster, "upgraded visuals," which in this case honestly just translates to lighting that resembles current standards (the original game was already quite pretty). There are improvements to other aspects too, like combat (including some new finishers), movement, and mount handling. Geralt's Witcher signs are looking a tad flashier as well, and monster behaviours have been "enhanced," whatever that might mean.
The buck does not stop there either. You can expect a revamp to the skill tree and the addition of transmogrification, meaning you can apply stats and the like from armour pieces you find to be ugly onto fits more to your taste. The RPG's photo mode is also getting expanded, and a lengthy list of more under the hood improvements can be seen in the trailer including ray tracing improvements, new accessibility features, UI improvements, new quest tracking, improved menu navigation and a lot more.
Oh, and did I mention that the game's two previous expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wide are being included in the freebies here too? No? Well, it's true! I haven't played the game since it came out, and never touched the expansions, so considering there's already a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 (don't own it on PC, leave me alone), I must admit this is a tempting offer.
This marks the second upgrade the game has received over the years, the last one releasing back in 2022. I suppose CD Projekt Red had to figure out something they could do to tide everyone over until The Witcher 4 (which will supposedly be targeting a 2028 release year (when pigs fly)). Still, a free remaster and some new DLC ain't a bad way to do it.
