For years, Konami was seemingly lost in the woods of the gaming industry. Following their acrimonious split with Metal Gear Solid creator and auteur Hideo Kojima, it seemed as though the legendary publisher and developer was just done with the video games business — seemingly content to make pachinko and slot machines. Not only have they seemingly reversed course, but, according to one executive in the company, it's just the start of an effort to reclaim their former glory days.

During a chat with Nikkei Gaming (which we found via TheNerdStash), Konami Digital Entertainment's president, Hideki Hayakawa, made it clear that his company's recent emphasis on remakes (like last year's Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater) and collections/re-releases (the soon to be released Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2) are just a starting point, not the entire plan.

"Reboots of existing IPs such as [Metal Gear], [Silent Hill], Castlevania, and Suikoden are important initiatives that serve as pillars of our business,” Hayakawa explained, pointing out how doing just those things helped Konami regain something they had been missing for a while - a good reputation.

"[B]oth with [Silent Hill f] and with the full remake of [Silent Hill 2]," he continued, "taking on that challenge gave us a real sense that we earned a certain level of recognition and acclaim.” Both Silent Hill releases have been both commercial and critical successes for Konami, with the latter being compared to other recent high-quality remakes, such as those of the second and fourth entries of the Resident Evil series. Hayakawa makes it clear, however, that leaning on established franchises, including proven revenue generators like Yu-Gi-Oh!, feeds into Konami's more uncertain goals.

According to one executive in the company, it's just the start of an effort to reclaim their former glory days.

"From a publisher’s perspective," he went on to explain, "franchise titles offer business stability. However, because they are established series, there are often many constraints when trying to introduce new ideas." New IPs, on the other hand, obviously have their pros and cons, but that risk is mitigated by the success of the sure-fire hits. Having that buffer allows creators to freely take chances and, in return, potentially create the next big IP for them.

It's a smart stance to take, not just for any game publisher, but especially for one that's trying to regain the goodwill of an audience it had recently lost in a very public way (and not just with Metal Gear Survive, either — which is good because nobody wants to talk about that).
