CAPCOM kicked off its Tokyo Game Show 2026 Presentation with a deep dive into Mega Man Dual Override, featuring an extended look at both its new features and its second protagonist, Proto Man.
The segment was helmed by the game's Director, Shinya Ikuta, and Producer, Hiroyuki Minamitani, and followed up on last week's Gameplay Trailer by revealing that Proto Man will be a close-range specialist. He also seems to be taking a few tools out of both Mega Man X's Zero and his Battle Network variant's kits by being armed with what seems to be his own Z-Saber equivalent.
In the developer's words: "Mega Man continues to be a balanced character capable of both close quarters and long range. Meanwhile, Proto Man deals even more damage and focuses on close-range attacks." His upgrade system was also a talking point, as he will get access to new shield-based abilities per Robot Master (or stage boss) he defeats. Mega Man, for those worried, will stay true to the IP's core Special Weapons system.
That likely means that each character will be able to get at least eight new tools during the game, with Dual Override having already confirmed its regular boss count. Among the lineup, seven of the enemies will be designed by the CAPCOM team, while the eighth will be selected among the finalists for the Mega Man: Dual Override Robot Master Design Contest. The winner is set to be revealed at a later date, via the game's official social media accounts.
The above mechanics seem to work in tandem with the game's Custom Ship System, which sees both playable characters get access to further abilities by equipping the right selection. According to Ikuta and Minamitani, over 50 chips will be available on release, with Mega Man's showcased Rapid Buster and Barrier being early examples of their effects.
If you prefer the classic experience, multiple first impressions from content creators revealed that players will also be able to ignore most of the system by equipping a readily available chip, only allowing you to call out Rush to your aid.
Both developers also had a lot to say about the game's Override system. A new addition to the franchise, it will allow players to power up the abilities of their character, all while "overclocking" Mega Man and Proto Man. The transformation, however, will be time-gated and will leave your chosen character vulnerable for a set amount of time following its use.
The reveal of the breakdown is, for many, another cherry on top of what they call a dream year for Mega Man fans. It also followed both the debut of the franchise's Fortnite skins earlier in the month and the arrival of Mega Man X: Command Mission on PlayStation 4 & 5. You can play the game through PlayStation Plus Deluxe or by purchasing it for $9.99 on either platform.
