CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory might have used Gamescom to make clear that they've got a Witcher thing in the pipeline for this year and the next two, but they've also had to put one of their previously cat-eyed projects on hold for the time being. The remake of the first Witcher game is on the back burner right now, since the next stage of work on it requires more progress to be made on The Witcher 4.
CD Projekt Red revealed this in a statement to Gamespot, noting that Fool's Theory's main focus right now is 2027's Songs of the Past expansion for Terry Witchboy 3.
"[The] Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4," the studio explained. "As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies. As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development."
Makes sense. If one thing depends on work that hasn't been done yet, get the majority of your devs focusing on something they do have the underpinnings for in place. Though, it does perhaps beg further questions as to why the studio chose to announce their Witcher Remake all the way back in 2022. It was a nice move from a transparency perspective, but as the likes of Bethesda know all too well, announcing a game means you've got to be prepared for folks to expect it not to take a huge amount of time to end up in their hands.
It's seemingly not been lilac and gooseberries for many Witcher projects that aren't just fresh single-player adventures recently, with devs on multiplayer Witcher spin-off Project Sirius having been laid off last month.
As of CD Projekt Red's latest financial results, released September 2nd, most of the studio's devs are on The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2077's sequel, as you'd expect. Interestingly, the studio are also reportedly hoping to add "up to 50" more devs to the 33-strong crew working on the mysterious game codenamed Project Hadar.
