The Toy Story 3 movie tie-in was a beloved, highly regarded title when it originally launched back in 2010.
In an era of lazy movie cash grabs – or crummy mobile games in today’s world – Toy Story 3 dared to be something that its peers wouldn’t: good. And Toy Story 3 Complete Edition’s slick new upgrade reinforces this.
Toy Story 3 is predominantly a platformer. You play as the main characters in the franchise: Woody, Buzz, and Jesse. You can swap between them at will – with a couple exceptions – and each of the game’s eight levels has a slightly different approach to objectives.
Some are more sandbox-like, having you wander around and complete minigames or gather collectibles. But sprinkled in are more traditional linear platforming levels, which lock you into one character. A standout has you recreate the famed opening of Toy Story 2, with Buzz infiltrating Zurg’s stronghold.
The linear levels really shine thanks to the game’s tight controls, even if the camera’s not as good as it could be. While it’s mostly okay, the camera will hitch up occasionally. The issue compounds on some of the platforming sections and will mess you up now and again, but it’s not a huge problem.
The linear levels aren’t everything, though.
In addition, you have the legendary Toy Box mode, an open world town builder area filled to the brim with content.
There’s a whole series of quests that unlock all manner of cosmetics and new townsfolk to populate your village. Buildings with different functions, like a barber or prison, are options, and you can customise their colors to your liking as well.
