Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura has admitted that the community’s reaction to Coco in Kingdom Hearts 4 “brought a tear” to his eye.
I know I’m incredibly biased when I say this, but Kingdom Hearts has to be one of the most special gaming series of all time. Beyond the impossibly lucky development that allowed such a unique crossover to happen in the first place, I’d argue that the dedicated community is the real biggest reason why there’s nothing else quite like Kingdom Hearts.
No matter how long it takes (and trust me, it can take a while), Kingdom Hearts fans always show up with unending excitement about whatever’s next for the series. This month’s D23 showcase was one of the best examples of that, and the fan feedback was so heartfelt that it even made Tetsuya Nomura emotional.
Earlier this month, Kingdom Hearts fans were well aware that the series was going to make an appearance at D23 with a special panel that we all hoped would have big news. What we didn’t know is that Kingdom Hearts 4 would actually make a surprise appearance one night earlier at the Entertainment panel to reveal the Coco world and animated series.
As the endless reactions on social media prove, Kingdom Hearts fans were absolutely blown away by the Coco world reveal thanks to how the trailer was purposefully set up as a surprise. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura opened up about the showcase reveal during a recent interview with Famitsu, and his reaction is incredibly heartwarming.
Nomura notes that the surprise factor was “exactly as planned”, and that the audience was “really excited” when it was revealed to be Kingdom Hearts 4 and not a Coco game of some kind. Nomura admitted that the reaction to the trailer “even brought a tear to my eye”, which is very nice to hear after nearly 25 years with the series.
I sobbed like a baby, especially when the late 2027 release window popped up.
While it’s no surprise that Kingdom Hearts fans are getting worked up by such a big reveal after years of waiting, we never really get to hear how Nomura feels about the series. As it turns out, he’s just as excited to see Kingdom Hearts 4 jumping back into the spotlight and, for me, that just cements how special the series truly is.
