Amid recent layoffs and continued instability in the game industry, Gamescom’s Directors say events like Gamescom are a valuable resource.
Gamescom 2026 promises to be an exciting showcase of new announcements and opportunities to check out how the biggest upcoming PC games are shaping up. This year feels like it weighs under an especially dark cloud, however, with continued layoffs and studio shutdowns prevalent across the entire industry. Despite this, the team behind the event is confident that background only makes Gamescom even more valuable. Ahead of this week's festivities, we asked Gamescom Director Tim Endres and Stefan Heikhaus, Head of Gamescom at German game industry association Game, how this year's show reflects the state of the business.
"The layoffs across the game industry are a serious concern," Heikhaus acknowledges. "Behind every job cut are talented people and valuable expertise that the industry cannot afford to lose." The number of companies impacted by job cuts or closures in 2026 is now in the hundreds, with some of the most notable including Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios, Bungie, Epic Games, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Riot Games. Despite this, Gamescom has been booked out to its full capacity this year.
"What we are seeing at Gamescom, however, is continued strong demand," Heikhaus continues. He explains, "The booked-up exhibition space and the layoffs are not a contradiction: Especially in challenging times, visibility, networking, and direct contact with fans, media, or partners become even more important. Gamescom cannot solve the industry's structural challenges. But it can be a place where people reconnect, find opportunities, gain visibility, and move important conversations forward."
"The challenges are real, and Gamescom is also a place to address them openly. But what we see here is an industry that is looking ahead," Endres adds. He notes that this year's main theme is 'Games spark excitement for the future,' and says it was chosen for this exact reason. "Across Gamescom, companies, developers, and professionals are discussing what comes next, forming new connections, and exploring the ideas and technologies that will shape the future of the industry."
That hope for the future goes beyond big-budget corporations greasing the wheels and striking deals for their next triple-A project. "In our entertainment and indie area, we also see more exhibitors than ever showcasing their games, reaching out to fans to get feedback, and actively seeking dialogue," Endres remarks. Does that make this year's event a strong show of life for the future? "I would say yes: Gamescom is proof that the game industry is working towards a better tomorrow with the possibilities provided today."
Gamescom 2026 runs from Wednesday August 26 until Sunday August 30 at the Koelnmesse exhibition center in Cologne, Germany. It will be preceded by the Opening Night Live Showcase on Tuesday August 25.
