A viral tweet about the first Kingdom Hearts being “harder than Elden Ring” has kickstarted a debate about the series’ surprising difficulty.
If you’re a veteran Kingdom Hearts fan like me, then you’re well aware that the series is hiding some truly challenging moments underneath its colourful Disney facade. Dragon Maleficent, Demyx, Lingering Will, Young Xehanort, and Yozora are some of the most notable examples of the series’ toughest boss battles, and there are so many more I could mention.
Don’t even get me started on doing it all on Critical difficulty…
While Kingdom Hearts fans have been getting beaten up by Kurt Ziza for nearly 25 years now, there are plenty of people who don’t know just how hard things can get. The series’ recent resurgence in popularity seems to have made that much clearer, though, and some players are even comparing it to Dark Souls and Elden Ring.
Over the past few months, Kingdom Hearts has risen from its four-year nap and finally brought the series back into the spotlight. That, coupled with a recent Steam sale, has made the series more popular than ever and encouraged a bunch of new players to jump into the wild world of Disney and Final Fantasy for the first time.
It seems that some of those new players are having a tougher time than they expected, with one particularly viral tweet from Twitter user whyc3lty suggesting the first Kingdom Hearts is “harder than Elden Ring”. They’re not alone either, as herapathx called the game “hard as s**t” and coined the wonderful phrase, “Disney Dark Souls”.
Both of those tweets have gone viral over the past few days, suggesting that quite a lot of people are having the same realisation about the first game. The wonderful Kingdom Hearts community has responded with some genuinely helpful tips in a thread by Twitter user ChronoKatie, including using Aero, not picking the Sword, and, most importantly, dodge rolling at all times.
While Kingdom Hearts obviously isn’t as difficult as either Dark Souls or Elden Ring, it is much tougher than a lot of people realise. The first game especially has some very specific mechanics and design that make it a bit of a pain if you don’t know what you’re doing. I just can’t wait to see what those same players think when they eventually go up against any of the infamous superbosses…
