Whether it be movies or video games, superheroes are always a safe bet. The source material for many fictional heroes is already established and has a large following, with countless people champing at the bit to see their favorite characters brought to life. Because of this, it’s significantly easier for directors and developers to get people interested in a project when a beloved superhero is at the forefront, rather than taking a risk on a new IP.
Still, despite it being a safe bet to get people interested, it’s still an incredibly hard and risky endeavor. Because some of these superheroes are so beloved, messing up the source material or failing to put a unique spin on them can easily anger people and cost you the trust of your consumers. This is especially true for Wolverine, arguably the most popular X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The good news is that Insomniac Games hasn’t let down its fanbase yet when it comes to its Marvel entries. Spider-Man 1 and 2, and its spin-off, Miles Morales, were all exceptional games that did the web-slinging hero justice, being praised by both fans and critics alike. Now, after playing through Marvel’s Wolverine, I must say that Insomniac Games’ portrayal of Logan is a success, but I’m not sure if it’ll satisfy all fans of its Marvel series.
It’s one thing to nail Wolverine’s combat repertoire, but it’s another to succeed in telling his story. I’d argue that the latter is more important because Logan, the man behind the Wolverine mask, has always been a deeply emotional character with a tragic background. Failing to capture Logan’s story would ultimately result in a missed opportunity, considering there is so much to tell.
Fortunately, the way Insomniac Games decides to tell the story of Logan and how it's presented to the player is one of the best parts of Marvel’s Wolverine. Players are drip-fed information on Logan’s story throughout the game, slowly revealing where he came from, what happened to him, and why he is the way that he is.
PlayStation Studios is known for its emotional storytelling, and while not all of them resonate with each player, most of them do a phenomenal job of portraying the human condition. This is especially true when it comes to characters who have experienced tragedy and loss. Logan’s tragic past and complicated relationship with his own identity in Marvel’s Wolverine result in a deeply personal story that explores what it means to live with trauma, loss, and regret.
