It's recently become a hot topic whether or not games should restrict players in certain titles with constant, ever-present time limits that force players to complete certain objectives or even the entire game within a specific timeframe.
These limits can often be stress-inducing for many players, but they also provide games with ample replay value and challenges as players strive to complete as many quests and objectives as possible in a single run or replay the game in order to try and beat completion records and objectives that were missed in prior runs.

One of the earliest games to feature constant time limits in a rather comedic way was 1993's Sonic CD, the premiere title for the Sega CD attachment for the Sega Geneisis.
Like most early 2D Sonic games, Sonic CD featured a timer recording how long it took players to complete stages, but if players took a break and didn't move Sonic for three straight minutes, Sonic would say "I'm out of here" and exit the stage, resulting in an immediate game over.
While this isn't exactly a stress-inducing time limit or one that restricts the player too much, it still forces players to pay attention to their actions in Sonic CD.
Not every game that features a constant time limit has to be stress-inducing or even feature a small timeframe. Some games employ such extensive time limits that most players don't even realize that they're on the clock, like the time limit mechanic seen in the Sega Dreamcast's extensive action-adventure game, Shenmue.
