Honestly, I had to include this quest simply because of how creepy and desolate the Soul Cairn is. If you haven’t been there already, the Soul Cairn is where souls go that have been trapped in Black Soul Gems. So, remember when you used that soil to enchant your sword? Yeh…
Whether it’s the hordes of withered skeletons that attack you, the bizarre purple sky or the constant crashing lightning overhead, this place just screams unnatural. And then to top it all off, of course, you have the huge undead decaying dragon that stands in your way. As soon as I enter the Soul Cairn, I just want to get out of there as quickly as possible!
If you’ve started the Dark Brotherhood questline, you’ll know where I’m going here. While it might seem pretty normal for the Dragonborn to go around killing people who stand in the way of progress, the same can’t be said for children.
Not only does Aventus Aretino perform the Black Sacrament, but he also demands you kill Grelod the Kind. And, while Grelod isn’t exactly a wonderful person, it’s still pretty bizarre seeing a child filled with such bloodlust. Then again, maybe getting rid of Grelod is a kindness to all the children. Thus starts the Dark Brotherhood Questline, and your descent into darkness.
