Summer is already over in the 38th parallel, which means the grind is in full swing at 1CGS. The developers of the Korea: Il-2 Series enjoyed a strong launch, but there are no illusions about how much work is ahead to help the flight simulator realize its full potential.
The team behind Korea and Il-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles sat down to explain the new updated roadmap, and the whys and hows of the future of flight simulation, with particular attention dedicated to hot topics like the AI system in Korea and the highly anticipated Deck Ops DLC.
Despite being a significant departure from Great Battles, it's no secret that the AI is currently the main thing holding Il-2 Korea back. According to producer Daniil Tuseev, although it took 1CGS four years to make its AI system stable at handling jets due to performance differences, there's no substitute for community feedback on how to make it good rather than just stable.
The current AI system in Korea is, at its root, an evolution of the core principle 1CGS has been working with since the days of biplanes and colorful scarves in Rise of Flight.
Tuseev explains that the AI is an "evolution of previous technology, with more than half the code changed, but as far as Rise of Flight goes, only some basic ideas are still there. For example, how a plane holds altitude when flying to a waypoint: the basic idea of using PIDs (proportional–integral–derivative) for controlling airplanes began in Rise of Flight for us, so it's still there. All, or at least most, flight sims use this approach."
There are no illusions about how much work is ahead to help the flight simulator realize its full potential.
