Graveyard Keeper 2 continues to give players a unique lifesim whereby you deal with the dead and keep various villagers happy by handling with their various mundane requests. It's a creepy cozy game, and that's accentuated by its art style. As such, some players may think that Graveyard Keeper 2 would be Steam Deck verified and optimized straight from the get-go. Unfortunately, the game isn't verified, but by optimizing some settings both in-game and on your Steam Deck, you can get it running much better relatively quickly.
Graveyard Keeper 2 doesn't have multiple graphical settings to change in-game. Instead, there is only one 'Graphical Settings' option that can be toggled anywhere from Lowest to High. By default, the game was running on High when I loaded it up on my Steam Deck.
I changed this to Low, and this seemed to improve the juttering framerate slightly, but it still wasn't perfect. To remedy this, I pressed the '...' button on my Steam Deck to open the right-hand side menu and selected the 'Performance' tab.
In here, I selected the 'Frame Limit' option and moved it down to 40 FPS (40 Hz). This does cap the max framerate of the game to 40 FPS, but it isn't that noticeable in the gameplay given its relatively slow-paced nature. By changing just these two settings, the game felt significantly smoother and still retained its visual charm.
I did try moving the Frame Limit up to 45 FPS (45 Hz) but found that the framerate was still too choppy for my liking. You might prefer to increase the Frame Limit and lower the in-game graphics settings to Lowest, but I found that 'Low' and 40 FPS were a good balance between graphical fidelity and smooth (ish) framerate.
The good news is that you don't need to spend time mapping the controls for Graveyard Keeper 2. The game has controller support, and the game automatically maps these controls to the Steam Deck perfectly.
With a bit of luck, developer Lazy Bear Games will release an update in the future to optimize the game for Steam Deck, getting rid of the need for players to make these optimization changes. For now, though, these are the best settings I found to enjoy this cozy game on my Steam Deck without feeling like I was getting a significantly worse experience than on my PC.
