As a PC-primary gamer, I do the vast majority of my gaming and library management through Steam, just like pretty much everyone else. It’s simply the most convenient option for keeping everything squared, and Valve doesn’t annoy me. In spite of Steam being the predominant choice for PC gaming for decades, other major gaming companies have attempted to get a slice of the pie with their own clients and launchers for nearly as long, with the only one to have a modicum of success being the Epic Games Store. This is a major reason I don’t play Ubisoft games much, for instance, because it has an obnoxious tendency to force you to download its client even if you buy the game on Steam.
However, it seems this obnoxious practice is finally coming to an end. Eagle-eyed Steam users on Reddit and X have discovered a library-hidden patch note from Ubisoft announcing a new in-Steam tool that will manage all the account-based minutiae that comes with playing Ubisoft games. This new tool, named Ubisoft Connect Services, will be implemented first on its well-liked, yet struggling metroidvania platformer, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, on a test basis, and will hopefully mark the end of Ubisoft’s annoying attempts to make “fetch” happen with its own client.
As the uncovered patch note explains, Ubisoft will implement its new Ubisoft Connect Services into The Lost Crown before any of its other games. Rather than being a standalone client like Ubisoft Connect, Connect Services is apparently a tool that will launch through the Steam client and, presumably, run alongside Ubisoft games. Connect Services will manage features tied to Ubisoft accounts, including cross-play and progression, player safety, and account challenges and rewards.
Most importantly, with Connect Services implemented, the Ubisoft Connect client will no longer need to be installed or launched on a PC in order to play Ubisoft games.
“This first version is an initial step toward a smoother and more streamlined launch experience on Steam,” the patch note reads. “We will continue to iterate and improve Ubisoft Connect Services over time, with the goal of delivering the features and services players use and expect while making the Steam experience as seamless as possible.”
The Ubisoft Connect client will no longer need to be installed or launched on a PC in order to play Ubisoft games.
