How to Aim Mortars and Artillery in WARDOGS

How to Aim Mortars and Artillery in WARDOGS

Indirect fire weapons like mortars and artillery tanks can be tricky to use in WARDOGS. For the most part, you'll mostly be just pointing a tube in the right direction and guessing how far away your shells need to be lobbed. However, there are some tricks to make mortar fire much more accurate in WARDOGS, from simple geometry to baked-in tools that make indirect fire easy (maybe a little too easy) to aim.

The same principles apply to both the Mortar emplacement and the SPH-2 artillery tank. The latter can be used from much fartther away, but it's locked behind a heavy XP grind.

While using a mortar or artillery tank, you'll be spending most of your time looking at the map, which is why you'll want to learn how to read it.

First, take your mortar's X and Y coordinates by right-clicking on your position, then do the same to your target's location. In the example above, my mortar is at (x98.77, y111.00), and I'm trying to hit a truck at (x95.36, y108.79).

Second, subtract the X and Y coordinates from both positions to get the vertical and horizontal ranges that you need to account for. In this case, it's (x3.41, y2.21). Multiply these by 100 (based on the 100M range scale on the map), and you'll get 341m and 221m.

Next, do a little geometry by applying the Pythagorean Theorem to triangulate your target's position. In this case, we get 406m.

Now that you're done finding the range, aim down your mortar, then adjust the tube's elevation until you reach roughly 406 meters. The closest range markers we have are 385 and 430m, so aim somewhere between those. Let the shell loose, watch the mortar cam, then make adjustments based on what you see.

Manually calculating the distance between you and your target isn't exactly the most convenient thing to do when using mortars in WARDOGS, but thankfully, you don't always have to do this. Apart from relying on the mortar cam, you can also see the exact distance of targets if they're spotted.
