We finally got a proper look at The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake earlier this week - and it's proving quite divisive. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by Zelda artstyle discourse after all this time, but the debate is only going to be more intense when it involves changes to one of the most beloved games of all time.
We've already talked about how the overall visuals have split fans, but there's one character in particular who has gotten quite a drastic redesign, and fans aren't quite sure what to make of it. I am, of course, talking about Sheik, who has been reimagined to look much more like her real identity, Zelda, while still being a plausible disguise for the princess. However, some feel that the redesign has gone too far, making Sheik look too feminine and not at all androgynous.
The main complaint from those who aren't big on the design is that her silhouette is too feminine. In the original game, Sheik was intentionally more androgynous (arguably leaning towards masculine), and characters in-game would mistake her for a man.
On the other hand, many fans like how Nintendo is leaning into Sheik being Zelda's disguise, rather than an entirely different person.
So far, I think it's safe to say this is the most controversial character design in the remake. There's some minor discourse about whether or not Young Link is ugly, which is pretty funny, but nothing on this level. Sheik is such an iconic character for a reason, and her design plays an important role in her story, so getting it wrong could ruin this remake for many.
We'll be getting a better look at Remake Sheik soon enough, so we can judge for ourselves. The Ocarina of Time remake launches on November 5, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
