Today, Xbox and Bethesda have finally revealed the name and more information about The Elder Scrolls 6. The game, which we now know carries the subtitle Sentinel, was revealed in a special video that took place today, 3rd November 2026, almost exactly 15 years since the launch of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and eight years, four months, and 23 days since the first reveal of the title card for The Elder Scrolls 6. That's over 100 months, by the way, or 3067 days, if you want to get specific.
In the trailer, a glimpse of the new game - mostly with some fancy sand physics - before the name, Sentinel, is revealed formally. "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate," says a quote in the video, attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell.
"For 40 years, we've explored new worlds, told unforgettable stories, and gone on incredible adventures together," says a blurb for new video. "From everyone at Bethesda Game Studios, thank you for joining us along this journey, for making these worlds your own, and for inspiring us to keep creating. Here's to 40 more."
This reveal comes after a report last week suggested we'd be seeing more of the highly-anticipated fantasy RPG in November, and which also predicted the name of the game. That report suggested that the title will take place in the Tamriel region of Hammerfell, will touch on the "history of the Elder Scrolls" and will "help uncover the secrets of these mysterious ancient artifacts". This trailer seems to confirm all that.
Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, said she'd played the game in August on a trip to the Bethesda offices, as a giant inflatable rat and a union protest took place outside. Notably, the reveal of the game is taking place not six months after Bethesda suffered sweeping job cuts (alongside many other Microsoft-owned studios) as part of Xbox's "reset".
So why has it taken eight years for Bethesda to show us this game? Previously, Skyrim's lead designer Bruce Nesmith noted that the studio and boss Todd Howard felt pressured to reveal the game to the world because "the pitchforks and torches were out". "[...] Todd's opinion - one which I share, by the way - is that the video game industry has short memories," he said in an interview in 2023. "Those companies that start touting their games years ahead of time, actually, you know, they screw themselves. The best time to start talking about it is six months before release." It's worth noting, then, that this is what Bethesda did with Fallout 4.
Does that hint at a timeline for more Sentinel footage being shown soon, and a potentially sooner-than-we-thought release date? Who knows. If we are going to see the game again anytime soon, it's most likely going to be during The Game Awards 2026, which is taking place on 10th December.
