8 Indie JRPGs for Players Who Want a Break from the Mainstream

As much as I love JRPGs with all my heart, whenever I finish an 80-, 90-, or 100+ hour-long journey, I end up with an impressive amount of fatigue and want to become a Valorant streamer and just shoot my hours away. But then, nothing can fix it like watching three episodes of anime or a K-drama to recharge my batteries and jump back into the mystical world of JRPGs.

However, I know that if I push my sanity and start another gigantic JRPG with mechanics so deep they could be a master's thesis, chances are high that I will get tired fast. That is why I like to alternate these more robust JRPGs with smaller ones, like cozy and adorable indie games.

Most indie games here weren't made by Japanese developers, but drew inspiration from JRPGs of yesteryear, creating their own titles in the genre. Some invent refreshing new mechanics, others refine a feature from an inspiring game, and a few indie JRPGs create something totally new and become a benchmark for the style. This list has a little bit of everything, and I hope it helps you find a new, beautiful indie JRPG for your backlog.

Best Indie JRPG Party Members Vi from Bug Fables The Everlasting Sapling

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is clearly made for Paper Mario fans, because not only does it feature the look, a timed input mechanic in battles, and puzzle exploration, but... Oh well, that is pretty much it. All of this is packed tightly into 25 hours of fun, up to 40 hours if you want to complete everything the game offers.

The RPG also has some metroidvania elements, because previously unexplored areas become accessible as we advance in the game, and the world feels alive, encouraging even more interaction with its NPCs. As I mentioned, the turn-based combat has timed gimmicks, but it is not just pressing a button and that is it. There are a few variations that make everything more engaging and lively, perfect for those who like fresh takes on the style.

I will be honest: I didn't vibe with Demonschool that much. I played it before launch and earned a platinum trophy, but the puzzle system and gameplay loop slowly lost me. At the same time, I have reviewer friends who absolutely loved the game, to the point that one of them gave it a pristine 10.
