Blocks for Babies is an upcoming Steam game that combines Tetris-style block stacking with a first-person shooter where players blast demonic blocks with a shotgun. The strange hybrid also includes roguelike upgrades, bosses, and an unsettling baby companion named Flapper.
Developed by two-person studio BunkSoft Interactive, Blocks for Babies is currently listed as coming soon on Steam, although a demo is already available. The game’s official website describes it as a roguelike block-stacking game with a shotgun.
The core gameplay begins with players stacking falling tetrominos and clearing completed rows in a familiar 2D puzzle mode. However, some dangerous blocks refuse to disappear when the surrounding lines are cleared.
That’s when the game switches into first-person combat. The hostile blocks transform into cubic monsters and attack the player. Players must grab a weapon and shoot them apart, removing the threats from the board for good.
The number of blocks players choose to confront can affect the difficulty. Taking on more enemies at once creates a greater challenge, but it can also clear more of the puzzle board.
Blocks for Babies also uses roguelike progression to make each run different. After completing rounds, players can choose perks and buffs that change how their block clears, weapons, and abilities work.
The Steam page also promises unlockable weapons, passive perks, tactical gadgets, altered puzzle pieces, bosses, and permanent rewards that carry over between runs.
The game’s oddest feature may be Flapper, the baby who asks players to help clean up the blocks. Kotaku’s preview described the baby continuing to follow the player around a house after the demo ended, giving the colorful puzzle game an unexpectedly creepy edge.
