I don't know if it'll deter others, but it is funny.
Activision and its Call of Duty teams may not always be able to keep up with a constant deluge of new hacks and cheats flooding the market, but it does have lawyers.
In a follow-up to last week’s RICOCHET Anti-Cheat update that showcased lawyers serving court papers to cheat makers at their own homes, Activision re-posted an apology issued from one of the devs behind cheats like Zenith and Devware, and it’s pretty funny to see.
“To the Call of Duty community and Activision, I’m deeply sorry,” they said, probably as a part of some deal to avoid further penalty of the law. It’s a seemingly common practice when these devs are shut down. “I helped create and sell cheats that damaged the game and unfairly impacted honest players. Activision caught me and I’ve permanently shut down all of my cheat services. I will never develop or distribute cheats again. If you’re making cheats, stop now. Activision will catch you too.”
I can just envision a scenario where the cheat-maker’s lawyer is leering over their shoulder as they begrudgingly post the message to their cheater Discord servers. And that brings me some joy, as it should all gamers who are trying to play online games fairly and for fun.
“We’re going after the people and businesses building and selling cheats – disrupting their operations, cutting into their profits and making it harder for those tools to reach your matches,” Activision said. “There are consequences for building and selling cheats. Legal action is one of them.”
While the extra layer of lawyer warfare is welcome to keep the playing field level, it does seem as though it’s a bit part white flag-wave, part warning shot from RICOCHET that says even if we can’t stop your cheats developing at a rapid pace, we can stop you with legal problems…or at least scare you into thinking you could face similar ones.
“The Modern Warfare 4 beta gave Team RICOCHET valuable real-world data,” Activision continued. “Across both weekends, we adapted detections, took action, and learned more about how cheat makers are trying to attack the game. This work is never done. We’re always testing and validating our tools. During that process, we discovered an unintended interaction between detection systems. We corrected any impacted accounts, fixed the issue, and are carrying those learnings forward.”
