MCU Fans Missed the Biggest Revelation About Avengers: Doomsday in Encore

This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame Encore.

Depending on your point of view, Avengers: Endgame Encore is either a must-see part of the ever-evolving MCU storyline or a shameless cash grab. Coming three months before the arrival of Avengers: Doomsday, Encore is a re-release of Marvel's 2019 record-breaking blockbuster that features new material intended to set up the incoming fifth Avengers movie. All in all, Encore contains four minutes of fresh footage, while the other 181 minutes are the same as Endgame's original theatrical cut.

For some, that will not be enough to justify the ticket price, but for others, those four minutes provide plenty to get them hyped for Doomsday's imminent incursion into theaters. Encore's fresh footage features cameos from various fan favorites who will return in Doomsday, including a few who hadn't even been confirmed to appear beforehand. Likewise, fans can extrapolate a few interesting tidbits about the plot from the nature of these new scenes. For the most fascinating tease at what's to come in Doomsday, though, Encore makes you wait all the way until the very end of its credits.

Although fans had been expecting Encore's new material to exclusively consist of post-credits scenes, this actually isn't the case. Encore's biggest alteration to Endgame comes in the form of an extended final scene, which reveals what happens next to Steve and Peggy after their tearful reunion. In Encore, the couple's long-awaited dance is interrupted by a knock at the door. On the other side is none other than Loki, who mysteriously reveals that he is there to help them both.

After that, there are two mid-credits scenes and one end-credits tag. The first mid-credits sequence comprises a follow-up to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and sees Bruce Banner recording a video diary. Banner reveals that he is voluntarily locked up in an underground bunker after his recent Hulk incident in New York. He is conducting a new experiment on controlling gamma radiation when someone appears in the bunker off-screen — Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr., in his Latverian accent, reveals that he is there to "collect" Banner. Fans hear the sounds of battle and a Hulk roar before the pair vanish, and the abandoned camera pans down to show one of Doom's green mystical runes scorched into the floor.

The second MCU mid-credits scene is exclusive to those who catch the film in IMAX/Infinity Vision. In the TVA, Owen Wilson's Mobius, Ke Huy Quan's O.B., and others are tracking a multiversal incursion between Earth-1127 and Earth-10005 (that's Deadpool's home reality, remember). These two universes are launching some kind of cosmic missile at each other to save their own realities. Multiple other incursions are happening across the multiverse all at once, and it appears that only three Earths survive. Presumably that is Earth-616, Earth-10005, and the Fantastic Four's Earth.

Last but not least, the final Encore addition is the smallest and yet arguably the most intriguing. In the original theatrical release, Endgame ended with the sound of Tony Stark's hammer clanging, in a callback to when he made his first armored suit in the original Iron Man film. In Encore, that sound is played again. Or, at least, it seems like it. The sound is followed up with a short clip that reveals not Tony building an Iron Man helmet, but Doctor Doom fashioning his own metal mask. While brief, this is quietly Encore's most illuminating piece of foreshadowing for Doomsday.

All of Encore's additional scenes reveal something interesting about Doomsday. The most obvious revelation is Loki teaming up with Steve and Peggy, which suggests that Steve deciding to remain in the past kicks off the threat to the multiverse that will play out in Doomsday. Likewise, the Hulk scene is the first confirmation that Mark Ruffalo will return for Avengers 5 and suggests that Hulk will be on Doom's side in the film. The TVA sequence also clarifies the enormous scale going into the movie and establishes ties to the Loki TV series.
