Living in the shadow of someone’s greatness takes grit, but Rem does it anyway throughout the Re: Zero - Starting Life in Another World series. Despite her sweet and devoted nature, Rem has about as much luck with finding happiness as she does with remembering any of her resets.
Even though her average abilities seem modest compared with what her prodigy twin sister Ram is capable of, there is nothing minor about Rem as a character. Rem has witnessed the demise of her entire village, including her parents, and her complex trauma lives a life of its own deep within her as self-inflicted guilt.
No doubt, Rem’s resets may seem like a walk in the park next to Subaru’s trail of deaths in Re:Zero in terms of sheer brutality. They do, however, paint a deeply sad picture of ongoing hurt and struggle, and it’s safe to say that Rem has very few happy moments to remember at the end of the day.
At one point in Arc 2, Subaru decides to steer clear of his duties at the Roswaal Mansion and instead chooses to hide out in Beatrice’s Forbidden Library. While he avoids leaving fresh tracks on the macabre trail of Subaru’s most awful deaths in Re:Zero that just keeps unfolding, Rem ends up walking to the Arlam Village alone. On her way, she walks into a rush of Mabeast Master Meili’s love for her canine-like companions and gets the dreaded cursed bite of a Wolgarm puppy in the process, which eventually drains her mana and kills her.
Out of all the resets, this one may feel like the least violent death Rem ever goes through. The sense of quiet tragedy is deeply woven into this reset, as Rem gets the fatal wound while being at the service of others and continues doing her chores in the shadow of others, only to die alone. She never finds out that there is a dangerous curse at work set to kill her, and she never gets to say goodbye to her beloved twin sister Ram. In fact, for Ram, the entire event comes as a profound shock, causing her to get consumed by grief and misplace her anger at Subaru.
During another reset in Arc 2, the fragrant side effect of Subaru’s ability gets the best of him, and Rem gets a feeling that Subaru bathes in the Witch's scent around the clock. It starts to emanate from Subaru, strong enough for Rem to perceive his smell and his erratic behavior as something very suspicious. Eventually, Rem’s fierce desire to protect others, dictated by her complex traumatic background, drives her to assume that Subaru is a threat who is trying to harm her sister and everyone else in the mansion.
As one of the coolest among the top protective anime waifus in existence, Rem gives herself the liberty to mercilessly bludgeon the weakened Subaru to death with her savage flail. Because it was the Witch Cult that slaughtered her family and village, Rem lets her deep-seated trauma take over and senses an existential threat in the Witch’s miasma that Subaru wears like some metaphysical cologne chosen for him. As she takes that leap from self-loathing to unadulterated savagery, she momentarily abandons her humanity to kill an innocent person.
As this reset unfolds, Rem’s traumatic past flares up alongside her paranoia about Subaru's odd behaviors, and this emotional build-up resolves in the worst way possible for Subaru. Rem perceives Subaru as a shady spy working for the Witch Cult, thanks in no small part to the Witch's scent that seems to be Subaru’s daily fragrance, and she hunts Subaru down near the cliffside. She then makes use of her flail to interrogate Subaru, and who knows how deep into the shades of savagery this interrogation could slide without Ram’s timely involvement.
