Final Fantasy Game Shadow Dropped for Nintendo Switch 2

Final Fantasy Game Shadow Dropped for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 owners have a new Final Fantasy experience to dive into starting today. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 edition that was shadow dropped during the September 9 Nintendo Direct. With the finale of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy releasing next year, Crisis Core serves as the ideal prequel for fans waiting to wrap up the story.

Originally released as a spin-off on the PSP back in 2008, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is a 2022 remaster of the game that brings the prequel story to modern platforms. While the Switch 1 received the game at launch, there were some technical hiccups with the port compared to its PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions. A native Nintendo Switch 2 port of Crisis Core should help iron those out and make it the definitive way to experience a game that was originally designed as a handheld title.

Announced during the recent Nintendo Direct, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 port. The game is already available on the original Nintendo Switch, but this Switch 2 edition will provide enhanced visuals and performance. It's unclear if there will be an upgrade path for existing owners of the game, but the game will be on sale for 30% off for a limited time. Included in this version of the game are:

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion follows the story of Zack Fair during the war between the Shinra Corporation and the nation of Wutai, set seven years before the story of Final Fantasy 7. As a member of SOLDIER, Zack is assigned the special mission of locating rogue SOLDIER agent Genesis, and discovers the secret behind the SOLDIER program and its connection with the legendary Sephiroth. Crisis Core sets the stage for the main Final Fantasy 7 games, providing a prologue that establishes characters like Aerith, Cloud, and Sephiroth as major players in the unfolding conspiracy.

In the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Zack returns for several playable segments in a deviation from the original Final Fantasy 7 PS1 game. Compared to the original, the FF7 Remake trilogy is not a one-to-one retelling of the classic game, but rather establishes an alternate timeline of events that start to overlap with the story fans know. As such, it's likely that Zack will appear again in the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, set to conclude the trilogy when it releases on April 8, 2027.

Beyond Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion's surprise Switch 2 shadow drop, the Nintendo Direct also gave fans another look at FF7 Revelation and confirmed its release date on Nintendo Switch 2. In this finale, players will take control of the Highwind airship and pilot around an open world, adding new allies Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind to their party. Additionally, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will include more party customization options, allowing players to change the jobs of their party members using the FITS system. While this release is still a few months away, fans can experience an improved Crisis Core experience on the Switch 2 in the meantime.
