Silent Hill: Townfall Just Broke One of the Series' Most Important Rules

Silent Hill: Townfall was released September 24 to widespread fanfare in the horror community. Silent Hill: Townfall marks the latest addition to the Silent Hill franchise, equipped with an entirely new story and new characters sure to scare the pants off audiences. Following in the footsteps of Silent Hill f, Townfall features your standard Silent Hill tropes, from blanketing fog to static-y radios and a narrative filled with psychological dread that stays with audiences long before the controller is set down.

While much has remained the same, the changes that have been made to the new Konami title are extremely surprising. In fact, they alter the DNA of what Silent Hill is, offering a new perspective for fans of the storied franchise to tap into, quite literally. Other changes made utterly dismantle certain narrative mechanics that have been with the games since 1999. This just proves that, no matter how established a gaming franchise is, you can always teach an old dog new tricks.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a revolutionary addition to the Silent Hill family, being the first in the franchise to utilize a first-person perspective. It makes a world of difference to gameplay. Audiences see the world of St. Amelia, a small coastal fishing village in Scotland, directly through Simon Ordell's eyes. Players embody Simon with this perspective switch, abandoning the dynamic third-person camera for something much more intimate. When players step into Simon's shoes, they are forced to face the reality of this smoggy new world.

They can't look away, not even for one moment, lest they be targeted by a monster hiding in the fog. There is no distance placed between the protagonist and the audience, and players come face-to-face with the horrors plaguing St. Amelia. Traversing the town's empty streets, ducking into abandoned apartment complexes, and fighting off shifty beings with a little more than a piece of wood creates a claustrophobic atmosphere that keeps players locked into the game, invested in Simon's survival because it is their own.

This change certainly heightens the horror aspect, making players come face-first with monsters as they run, or shamble, directly at you, right into Simon's face.

This is exactly why something like The Blair Witch Project or As Above, So Below is so frightening. Audiences are directly impacted by what the camera is pointing at. If the character on screen doesn't look away, viewers won't be able to either. These things are being presented right before our eyes, making them more of a believable threat than if we were far removed from them, a watcher of sorts.

First-person perspective, at least for me, instills a sense of loneliness. I must come to terms with the fact that, as I embody this character, I have nobody else to lean on, beyond myself. The Atmosphere of St. Amelia somehow enlarged through a perspective like this, making the town seem expansive and even more mysterious. At times, I felt myself unable to go on, afraid of what might be lurking should I make a wrong turn.

I believe that this is just what the Silent Hill franchise needed, filling in a missing piece that the catalog lacked. So many horror titles play around with first-person because it directly puts players in the driver's seat, rather than feeling like some omnipresent being piloting a character over their shoulder. It is a spine-chilling edition that especially got me frightened when I was trying to traverse apartments. Tight corners gave me little to no unobstructed views, leaving me wondering if something was going to jump me when I turned corners. All this to say, first-person is not for the faint of heart.
