While I wouldn’t call it my favorite genre of television, I like a good romance story as much as anyone. It’s nice to see people coming to understand each other and find happiness in that, and I’m definitely not opposed to some good ol’ fashioned cuteness and feels. What I am opposed to, however, is the kind of cheap drama that proliferates through romance anime. You know the kind: stupid misunderstandings, love triangles, constant will-they-won’t-they nonsense, and just generally the kind of stuff that would never happen if the leads just talked to each other like people.
I’m not saying a romance anime can’t have any drama, of course, but it has to be relevant to the plot, based on the characters’ specific worries and shortcomings, rather than a cheap ploy to pad for runtime. If you want more romance and less time-wasting nonsense, try these romance anime that do a better job of cutting to the chase.
Something a lot of people want out of a romantic partner is someone who understands and sympathizes with their personal difficulties, rather than brushing them off. We all have our own quirks, after all, and nothing helps bring you closer to someone than them experiencing the same or similar ones. Take, for example, chronic insomnia, which both our leads in Insomniacs After School live with.
High-schooler Ganta Nakami hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in years due to some personal issues, which hasn’t done his social life any favors. One day, he sneaks into the school’s abandoned observatory to catch some quick shuteye, only to stumble upon Isaki Magari, attempting to do the same in an effort to alleviate her own insomnia. Following their awkward first meeting, the two strike up a friendship, keeping each other company in their sleepless nights and building a budding affinity for nighttime astronomy and photography, all the while slowly overcoming the issues that keep them awake with each other’s support.
The stereotypical male lead in a romance anime is usually generically handsome, even-proportioned, and so on. People like handsome protagonists, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but obviously, not everyone looks like that. That’s part of what’s fun about My Love Story: its protagonist, high schooler Takeo Gouda, is built like a lowland gorilla, but he’s got no shortage of love to give.
Due to his massive frame and gonky face, Takeo has basically no luck with women, with any he attempts to court usually just trying to go through him to his handsome best friend Makoto instead. However, by chance, he rescues another high schooler, Rinko Yamato, from a creep on the train, and despite her small frame and shy personality making for an interesting contrast, this chance encounter leads to a genuine romance based on mutual respect between the two of them. Not only is Takeo and Rinko’s relationship adorable, but this show also has history’s greatest wingman in the form of Makoto, who will not tolerate anyone talking smack about his best bro, and does us the vital service of expediting Takeo’s realization that Rinko likes him. Everyone deserves a bro like Makoto in their life.
