The Blood Of Dawnwalker Time Limit Might Not Return In Sequel

Unfortunately, time limits are pretty rare in games these days, which is a shame because The Blood of Dawnwalker is a perfect reminder of why they work. The moment a game puts any kind of restriction on doing whatever you want, whenever you want, players tend to see it as frustrating busywork rather than an intentional part of the story and design. That's why it's so telling that mods removing Dawnwalker's time limit were appearing before the game had even launched. Have we really forgotten the slapstick joy of playing poker until 2am and accidentally letting your daughter die in Dead Rising, or watching Link get flung off-screen by a crashing moon in Majora's Mask?

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz addressed the backlash to the mechanic and the mods removing it, urging players to "try this implementation we have." He also pointed out that it's possible to complete around "80% of the content with the time mechanic" anyway. So, no, he's not backing down. But will every game in the series have a time limit? Not necessarily.

"We didn't decide it, to be honest," Tomaszkiewicz said. "We will play with it. If we will have parts of the story, or the whole story, to which it fits, then we will use it. If we will have stories where it does not fit, we will not force it. We will play with this system and we will try to use it to boost the urgency of some events in the game. But I'm not saying that in every game we will have the same scheme or loop — it's not like this. We are also considering and researching some other crazy ideas which can make the RPG genre different to surprise people in the future."

It's funny that the time limit has caused such a stir when people regularly poke fun at the total lack of urgency in games like Oblivion and Skyrim, where the world is literally ending while you're busy marrying hagravens and gorging on cheese with Daedric Princes. The Blood of Dawnwalker finally gives some weight to those distractions, forcing you to prioritize and think strategically rather than inevitably becoming a jack-of-all-trades who conquers the entire sandbox. Thankfully, while the time limit isn't set in stone for future games, Tomaszkiewicz sticks by it.

"The arguments of 'I want to see everything in one playthrough' I understand, but it's false to begin with, because even in games like The Witcher, you cannot see everything in one playthrough because you have choices and consequences, and different things happen when you choose different things," he explained. "The time mechanic somehow adds to that, but if it's so much, I don't think so."

Frankly, considering the game sold one million copies in its first three days, it clearly wasn't that much of an issue.
