Marvel Rivals is free-to-play, so naturally, it tries to shake you down for money at every turn. We've got battle passes, multiple types of currency, paid seasonal events, gacha mechanics, mini battle passes, and so much more. And still, Marvel Rivals manages to frustrate me less than Overwatch, because at least the skin prices are somewhat reasonable by free-to-play game standards.
However, apparently, that wasn't always the case. Popular Marvel Rivals datamining group XOX Leak has claimed that a tier of skins above Legendary - which is currently the highest in the game - was on the table at some point. In fact, NetEase is said to have considered bringing them back after initially scrapping them, but the plans fell through. No points for guessing who would have got one of these skins.
"In the early days of Rivals development, there was a tier above Legendary that was red colored," XOX Leak says. "It was never used since then but they have considered it at one point."
XOX Leak adds that they believe that Lady Loki would have been this tier of skin. That makes sense, since the Lady Loki skin gives the character an entirely new voice actor. However, Lady Loki has gone on to get skins of her own, so giving Loki multiple skins like this would have been pricey.
What is utterly unsurprising is that, from what XOX Leak can remember, Luna Snow was going to get one, too. She already gets a ridiculous amount of content (not that I can talk as a Cloak & Dagger main), so it's only natural that she would get one of the most expensive skins in the game.
On the whole, it sounds like these are comparable to Overwatch's Mythic or Ultra skins. These are a step above Legendary, and as such, cost way more. At the very least, Mythic skins will offer unique animations and voice lines. While Ultra skins do offer some unique cosmetic changes too, more so than Legendaries, they have recently come under fire over their price. In fact, a recent pack of ultra skins would have set you back about $200.
