Slay the Spire 2 dev Mega Crit returns from break to work on alternate areas, new modes, and secret features for the roguelike deckbuilder.
Slay the Spire 2 updates have completely vanished in the past month, but with good reason, as developer Mega Crit was on its annual team break. It's always nice to see devs able to make the time for some rest and recuperation - it makes games better, and the initial rollout of the roguelike deckbuilder has certainly delivered more than enough to merit some fun in the sun. Having now returned from its sojourn in Barcelona, the studio is back to work on all those features in the Slay the Spire 2 roadmap, and it's starting with a teaser.
In its September 'Neowsletter,' the Slay the Spire 2 team reveals it "visited the historied city of Barcelona and ate all the tapas, walked through all the Gaudis, and navigated its winding gothic quarters for silly trinkets." Having taken its rest, Mega Crit has now "resumed work on tons of secret features, game modes, content, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements." Prior to its break, the dev teased it was actively in the process of building experimental modes, an alternate region for act two, and the next character to join its roster.
"While we still can't give a specific timeline or details for the next patch, rest assured that the things we've got cooking are BIG and much of it is already being actively tested internally," the post continues. That means it doesn't have as much to show as you might expect from previous editions of the monthly Neowsletter, but instead it has brought back one familiar segment you might remember from prior to launch: Spire Spotting.
"Intrepid explorers, it has been quite a while since we last enlisted your aid in our research," the team announces. "For those of you who were around more than half a year ago, waiting for the Spire to open its gates to prospective slayers once more, this task will be familiar." The feature was one of my favorite parts of the build-up to release, with community members creating their best interpretations of what could be hiding behind each enemy silhouette.
It sounds as though this latest critter will be appearing in our next alternate act: "In exciting news, our researchers have discovered another area of the Spire still shrouded in darkness. Before we explore it fully, it would be prudent of us to get a lay of the land first. And it just so happens that we've already detected the silhouette of one of its inhabitants."
To give you a sense of scale, Mega Crit suggests the creature in question is "some sort of small, floating excitable being," and adds, "though this isn't the most scientific of descriptors, it seems almost… cute." Keeping expectations in check, the developer notes that "It may be a while yet until this strange section of the Spire will fully reveal itself to us, but we can discover at least some of its secrets in the meantime."
If you want to submit a guess, you can do so via email or the Slay the Spire 2 Discord - and the deadline of Thursday October 8 suggests that we'll probably get to see the best suggestions, along with the actual reveal, when the next Neowsletter arrives. It'll also likely give us a closer glimpse at what the overarching tone of the new act might be. I'll be waiting with bated breath.
