Prime Video's Neagley has already found the character who can fill the space Jack Reacher leaves behind when he isn't around: Hudson Riley. The new Reacher spin-off spends much of its debut season positioning the Chicago detective as the kind of trusted investigative partner Neagley rarely allows into her life.
The spin-off needed that dynamic, to put it mildly. Neagley and Reacher share years of history, complete confidence in each other's abilities, and an investigative rhythm that requires little explanation. Giving Neagley her own series meant separating her from that familiar partnership. Reacher can occasionally enter her story, but keeping him permanently at her side would undermine much of the point of letting her lead it.
Neagley Season 1 ultimately fills that vacancy with Detective Hudson Riley, played by Greyston Holt. He enters Neagley's investigation into the death of her childhood friend Tommy Crane as someone useful rather than someone she trusts, allowing their partnership to develop on-screen, unlike Neagley and Reacher's already-established relationship. Across eight episodes, Riley progresses from a reluctant investigative ally to a core collaborator, gradually getting past some of Neagley's defenses. Speaking to Men's Journal in September 2026, Holt contrasted Neagley's long-established trust in Reacher with her initial treatment of Riley, whom she primarily keeps around because he can help solve the case. Riley instead has to earn Neagley's trust over the course of the season, letting the audience watch their partnership develop from the beginning.
Riley is very much intentionally written as a foil to Reacher. Jack is a former military investigator and perpetual drifter, while Riley is a Chicago police detective with local roots and a complicated family reputation. Reacher is comfortable operating outside conventional rules, whereas Riley begins Neagley with a much stronger attachment to procedure and the institutions surrounding his job. That difference creates friction between them: Riley challenges Neagley rather than instinctively understanding every decision she makes, while working with her gradually complicates his own ideas about rules and justice. Their difficult family histories give them common ground, allowing Riley to see beyond some of Neagley's defenses as the Crane investigation becomes increasingly personal. Instead of recreating the Reacher-Neagley dynamic, Neagley gets to show a new partnership taking shape.
Their relationship eventually moves beyond professional trust as well. Riley admits that he cares about Neagley and asks whether he can kiss her near the end of the season, but accepts her boundary when she makes clear she is not ready. The scene stops short of turning their partnership into a romance, while establishing the possibility of an intimacy fundamentally different from Neagley's friendship with Reacher.

The finale makes Riley's longer-term role even clearer. After the central case concludes, Neagley buys York Investigations and brings Riley, Renee Birdwhistle, and Keno into the organization, giving the ensemble a reason to remain together. That turn of events sets up a markedly different structure from Reacher, where Jack's wandering lifestyle allows him to move on once a case is finished, often leaving supporting characters behind in the process.
Riley therefore doesn't replace Reacher in Neagley's life, nor does Season 1 of the new spin-off series suggest that he has already earned the same level of trust. What he can replace is the role Reacher has traditionally played opposite Neagley: the capable, dependable partner who investigates beside her, challenges her, gains her confidence, and draws her into the kind of back-and-forth she cannot have as a lone wolf. Putting Riley in that position also flips one of the most familiar relationships from both the show and Lee Child's books: Neagley has long been the person Reacher can call when he needs a trusted partner beside him, and if the first eight episodes of Prime Video's new series are any indication, Hudson Riley has what it takes to eventually serve that very same purpose for her.
