Wardogs will become considerably more expensive as it grows through early access, but Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer has defended the decision and told players who don’t think it’s worth the money not to buy it.
Rather than sticking with one price throughout development, Bulkhead plans to increase the cost of its successful new FPS alongside major updates. Speaking to GamesRadar+ at Gamescom, Brammer described the approach as “scaling pricing.”
After launching at $40 in early access, Wardogs is expected to reach version 0.5 in around 12 months, and the cost will jump to $49.99. After roughly two years, that will rise again to $59.99.
That means players willing to jump in earlier can get the game for less, while those who would rather wait for a more complete experience will pay more.
“If you don’t want to get in now, wait for there to be more content, more stuff, buy it later,” Brammer explained. “You want to buy in cheap now? That’s fine too.”
Brammer argued the increases reflect the growing amount of work going into Wardogs, saying Bulkhead sits somewhere between an indie and AA studio, and that the game’s realistic visuals are costly and time-consuming.
“This game costs a lot to make. If you want to play a cheaper FPS, you may go and play a cheaper FPS. That’s absolutely fine,” he said. “But this is what our game is worth. Our game is worth this, and if you don’t agree with that, please don’t buy it.”
Brammer acknowledged Bulkhead is setting a “precedent” with the model and expects the higher prices to bring higher expectations from players. But Bulkhead believes charging more as development progresses is necessary if it wants to keep supporting the FPS in the long term.
