Earlier today, Nintendo aired it's big anniversary stream for The Legend of Zelda, and while there were plenty of decent announcements (you can find them all here), the show was pretty much dedicated to showing off the Ocarina of Time Remake.
We got a bunch of new details about the game, thanks to a very lengthy gameplay demonstration and a couple of new trailers, showcasing how much the game has changed thanks to the leap in modern technology. Not only does Link have a dedicated jump button now (I know, we're really getting crazy), but it also has a completely controllable camera too.
However, one of the weirder ways the game has changed is when Link plays the Ocarina. You can still play it normally like in the original game, but if you really want to get yourself immersed, you can use the Switch 2's built-in microphone to hum the songs yourself.
This was demonstrated by The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma during the show. In the game, you'll be able to whip out your Ocarina, and the Nintendo Switch 2 microphone will detect inputs from yourself in the real world. Aonuma shows this feature off by humming Zelda's Lullaby into the mic, which is then picked up by the Switch and played in game.
If you don't feel like humming, or you're worried about sounding like a weirdo, worry not. Ocarina of Time will even respond to instruments that you play down the mic too, including a special Ocarina that has been made and is being sold alongside the remake for that exact purpose. That means, if you get one of these Ocarinas, you could just play the Ocarina into the Switch 2 to use the Ocarina in game.
It's a goofy little thing, and while I probably won't be humming into the Switch 2's mic to change the time of day, I still enjoy Nintendo's willingness to incorporate its hardware gimmicks into the games it makes. Except for motion controls, please leave those in 2005.
