Valheim follows a biome-based progression system where equipment and materials are generally locked until you clear each biome in a set order. The game doesn't tell players this, though, so it's easy to accidentally stumble upon an area that they really shouldn't be in yet. If you want to get a general idea of how to progress through Valheim, here's the correct order of biomes that you need to do, as well as all the important resources you can find in each of them.
The Meadows is the first biome all players will spawn in, and it's also the most peaceful among the bunch. There's precious little here that can pose a threat to you, but as such, there aren't many valuable resources either. This biome will give you everything you need to get started, including important resources like basic food and Queen Bees, which you'll need to produce your own honey.
Eikthyr, the Meadows boss in Valheim, can be summoned by using Deer Trophies in an altar, and beating him unlocks your first pickaxe. Mount this boss' head in the ritual circle on the initial spawn point and activate it to gain the ability to use Eikthry's power, which grants the following buffs:
You can find two axe heads and craft the Early Axes weapon by exploring the Meadows biome.
Things get much more dangerous in Dark Forest biomes. Here, you'll face trolls, bears, skeletons, and hordes of Greydwarves. This is also where you can start making your first metal equipment using Bronze, which is made by combining Copper and Tin.
The Elder is the boss in charge of this biome, and you can challenge him by collecting Ancient Seeds from Greydwarf spawners. beating him rewards you with the Swamp Key, which you can use to open Sunken Crypts inside Swamp biomes. Mounting the Elder in the ritual circle enables a power that grants the following buffs:
Apart from having deadlier enemies, Swamp biomes will also force players to adapt to poison and the Wet status, which reduces their stamina regeneration rate. Make a habit of building plenty of small camps so you can dry off and heal up. Use the Swamp Key from the Elder to enter Sunken Crypts, where you can mine Iron Scraps.
Bonemass is your main target in the Swamps, and to fight him, you need to collect Withered Bones from Sunken Crypts. Beat this boss to get the Wishbone, an item that detects Silver ore deposits in Mountain biomes. Invoking Bonemass' power grants the following effects:
