Xbox has announced hard monthly time limits will be added to its cloud gaming streaming service this November. Don't worry though, if you run into these limits, you can always buy more hours on the Xbox store.
Once players run into these time limits, the blog post explains they'll be able to buy more directly from the Xbox store. The exact pricing details have not yet been revealed, but it's written that pricing may vary by market.
Xbox justifies these incoming monthly limits in the blog by pointing to the fact that providing cloud gaming services becomes more expensive "as more people use it and play for longer", and adds that moving to monthly limits allows the company to continue offering the service while "continuing to invest in its reliability and performance."
According to a 2025 report from Statista, US gamers spent an average of 9.5 hours per-week playing video games, UK gamers came in at 6.38 hours, and a worldwide average of 6.56 hours was recorded. This means - assuming this time was spent streaming games - these territories would run into the hour cap far before a month had passed. With Xbox reckoning this will only affect four percent of its overall playerbase; it's perhaps not a great statistic if the company is keen to show off the health of Game Pass and its cloud-based services, in general.
One also has to wonder how feasible large-scale success for cloud gaming actually is, if the service becomes more expensive to offer as more players begin using it. Especially for lengthy single player or live service games, which both can eat up hundreds of hours in playtime - at what point does simply downloading the video game become more convenient than streaming it via the cloud?
Even so, industry giants remain bullish on cloud gaming. Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said he believed we'd all be streaming our games in about "three years" in a recent financial report, while Xbox rolled out an ad-supported game streaming test for its insider programs. This all comes during a hardware crisis where the cost of buying consoles and gaming PCs has become less accessible, potentially leaving streaming the sole option for many in the future despite its issues.
