Square Enix accidentally botches a Nier: Automata update, balloons required file size from 50GB to 366GB on PC

Yesterday, Nier: Automata received a new patch on Steam, adding more language support to the title - it can now be played with Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese options - but this new update also, somehow, inflated the file size of the game on PC from about 50GB to 366GB. D'oh! What's worse is, the update is not optional.

The cause of this, reportedly, is a bug that caused all the DLC in the YoRHa Edition of the game to become the same size as the base game - and the new download stacks them all concurrently. "Only SquareEnix can turn 40GB into 366GB with 8GB patch," says one dissatisfied Steam reviewer.

If you don't have space for this massive new file on your PC (and I can't say I blame you, it's ridiculous), there is a workaround, as confirmed by Square Enix in a tweet via its Japanese Twitter account.

"We have confirmed an issue where, following the latest update to the Steam version of Nier: Automata, the installation process indicates that more storage space is required than expected," noted the publisher. "We are currently investigating the cause and working on a solution. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. As a temporary workaround, you can download the base game by unchecking the DLC under Steam → Properties → DLC."

It's quite ironic, really, that so many Steam reviewers are complaining about things like "I just need to delete 90% of my computer to install this" when a large part of the game is managing the software/programmes installed on your android protagonists in order to upgrade your abilities and stats. There's even an ending for uninstalling your OS on your mechanical main characters. I'd be inclined to suggest this is some sort of meta psy-op from creator Yoko Taro, but… nah, that's just fantasy, isn't it? Isn't it?

Speaking of Taro, earlier this year we learned that "Nier Automata will continue", though we only heard back in 2025 that most of the projects the developer was working on were cancelled. One of these may have been the Tencent-backed Nier mobile game in 2024, which reportedly "struggled to find a monetisation to offset its high costs."
