The Sharingan is an incredibly powerful Kekkei Genkai jutsu that was officially introduced to us early on in the Naruto series in Chapter 12, officially released on January 8, 2000, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #2. Since then, the Sharingan has gone on to establish itself among the very best abilities in the entire series. With further evolutions such as the Mangekyo Sharingan and other supplementary abilities, the Sharingan is quite easily the most exciting power in the story to watch. Unfortunately, this eye has taken a backseat in the Boruto franchise, just like many other abilities, and is on course to be ruined in more ways than one.
When the Sharingan was officially introduced to us, it was stated to be the copy eye. The primary power of this eye was to see through Genjutsu, Ninjutsu, and Taijutsu of all sorts, but at the same time, it was also able to copy the abilities of the enemy. This copying ability of the Sharingan was incredibly important in the early part of the series. It is what allowed Kakashi to establish his legend as the copy ninja of the world. It is also what allowed Sasuke to press forward in arcs like the Chunin Exam, where it came to his aid as he was able to learn Rock Lee's movements.
“It is said that some have the ability to see through all types of Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu. The Sharingan is one of the eyes that gives you this power! But that's not all the power this eye has. The Sharingan also has the ability to copy your enemies' techniques once you see them!” — Sasuke explains the Sharingan, Naruto Chapter #12
As Sasuke's Sharingan grew, his powers grew as well, but in the Boruto era, the Sharingan has been downgraded dramatically. Sarada Uchiha, the only new user of the Sharingan that we got properly in the Boruto series, was never given the platform to utilize this eye properly. Sarada's Sharingan was largely useless other than helping her use the power of Chidori against Boro early on in the series, and then she went on to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. This basically meant that all the other abilities of the Sharingan, such as Genjutsu prowess and the ability to copy nature transformations and see through other Jutsu, were completely ignored. Right now, it can be said that the Sharingan in Boruto is a shell of its former self.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has already played quite a lot with the concept of the Mangekyo Sharingan. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 20, which was officially released on March 18, 2025, Sarada Uchiha tapped into the Mangekyo Sharingan and utilized what can be stated to be one of the most powerful abilities of all time, called Ohirume. This eye power was so strong that even an Otsutsuki-level enemy such as Ryu was essentially one-shotted.
"The restraints are gone? What happened? The Iron Sand is gathering in one spot. No, it's being sucked in. Those eyes, that's the Mangekyo Sharingan!" —Mitsuki explains Sarada's Ohirume Ability, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #20
Later down the line, she faced Mamushi and once again utilized this power on him, destroying around 15 copies of him in a single strike and showcasing the immense firepower of this eye. On the surface level, this eye power seems the best that the Mangekyo Sharingan has to offer, but looking at it on a much deeper level, Sarada is already going blind after using her new Sharingan a grand total of two times. Going blind with repeated usage of Mangekyo Sharingan is a given, and Sasuke faced similar issues, but for Sarada to pass out and face severe repercussions after only using this eye twice goes to show that it has been nerfed far more than before.
"As I thought, the prescription doesn't seem right. Your eyesight has clearly worsened compared to before. It's a risk that inevitably follows the Mangekyō Sharingan. The more you use it, the more your eyesight deteriorates... It depends on the nature of the technique and how it's used... but in any case, if you keep using it like this, eventually, you'll go completely blind." — Sarada's blindness is confirmed, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #34
