CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it currently plans to release The Witcher 4 in 2028. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski says that the game will not be shown at Gamescom this week, but he does give fans some superlative teasers about the RPG's scope and ambition.
"Our team here at CD Projekt Red HQ is hard at work on a brand new saga, one with Ciri at the helm," Nowakowski says in a video message shared with fans on social media. "We have more than 500 incredibly talented developers working to create something truly special for you. The Witcher 4 features a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time."
While we will see The Witcher 3's new expansion, Songs of the Past, at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, Nowakowski confirms as part of this message that The Witcher 4 will not be at the show.
To our beloved fans, players, and community:
As we near #gamescom in just a few days, CD PROJEKT RED Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski would like to personally invite YOU to join us there, and hear about the future of The Witcher franchise!
"Simply put, this is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date. Now, I know you're eager to learn when it's coming. That's the question we're hearing from you all the time. So while we're not showing The Witcher 4 at the event, and we're not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this… The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. I know it's a bit of a wait and you'd love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait."
Put some extra emphasis on "targeting" there, because given the scale of AAA game development, it would almost be more surprising if CD Projekt Red is able to finish the game by this initial target date. The studio delayed Cyberpunk 2077 no fewer than thee times, and given its state at launch, it probably should have been delayed even further.
I've no doubt that CDPR wants to avoid another Cyberpunk situation, so I'd expect the studio to take every second of time necessary to ensure that The Witcher 4 launches in the best state it can. And while 2028 might seem miles away, look at it this way: The Witcher 4 will probably still come out before The Elder Scrolls 6.
Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 predictions: 5 games we'd like to see.
