The news of BioWare's shutdown is one of the most tragic and disappointing developments in video game history. This is the company that spawned countless memorable franchises, from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to bringing Baldur's Gate to the masses in video game form, to what may be the best sci-fi trilogy of all time, video game or otherwise, in Mass Effect.
Because of several missteps along the way, a failure to understand the player base, and falling prey to corporate demands, we no longer have one of the true artists of the video game world. Whether you grew up with them like I did, or jumped in later and went back through their catalog to see the masterpieces you missed out on, chances are, if you ever experienced a BioWare game, you likely fell in love with one. Let's take a look at how this once proud company became no more.
BioWare as a company had been around since 1995, but their heyday didn't really come until they released Baldur's Gate in 1998. Taking the DnD world and putting it into video game form had never been done in that way before, and it led to a massive new franchise. They rode that wave until the sequel and then expanded upon that idea with Neverwinter Nights, which was also a pretty impressive title in its own right.
The name BioWare really became mainstream within the game world when it released Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Until that point, Star Wars games had more or less been theme park rides, hitting all the iconic moments of the series with your favorite characters, but nothing that really felt as in-depth as the iconic franchise should've been capable of. Then along comes BioWare with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and not only gives us an incredible game that all ages can enjoy, but expands the lore of the iconic universe and also provides one of the best twists in gaming history, and one that even surpasses "I am your father" for my money.
From there, BioWare was off and running, armed with the capital to create its own stories after knocking it out of the park with several known IPs. The first of which is a near and dear game to my heart, Jade Empire, which to this day is the only Martial Arts RPG ever made. This incredible game utilized real-time combat, a complex morality system, and some of the best stories written for a BioWare game, which is really saying a lot.
It wasn't a mega hit and didn't spawn a franchise, but it was a great example of their creative chops going to work on something truly original, and it was a decent enough success to power the ship that would eventually become their magnum opus two years later. In 2007, Bioware was purchased by EA, and shortly after that, Mass Effect was released, giving us a sprawling space RPG on a scale we'd never really seen before. The characters, the world, the story — it was incredibly compelling, like playing through your own movie franchise.
