Modern Warfare 4 is introducing a brand-new multiplayer mode that takes plenty of inspiration from competitive shooters like Counter-Strike and Valorant.
Collateral puts two teams against one another in a single-life mode built around two bomb sites. Teams take turns attacking and defending, but unlike Search and Destroy, players won’t enter each round with their custom loadouts.
Instead, everyone starts with a pistol and earns cash by eliminating enemies and playing the objective. That money can then be spent between rounds on better weapons, equipment, armor, and Perks.
Players can also buy equipment such as Flash Grenades, Molotov Cocktails, Stims, Riot Shields, and a Smoke Wall. There’s even a Team Buy option for a UAV, suggesting that squads can pool their cash together to unlock the Scorestreak, although further details on exactly how this works haven’t been revealed.
The economy adds an extra layer of strategy to every round, as money carries over throughout the match, allowing players to save their cash for more powerful purchases later on. However, dying means losing everything you’ve bought for that round.
Collateral also strips away several of CoD’s usual mechanics, as respawns are disabled alongside Killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, and custom loadouts.
This sounds noticeably different from traditional multiplayer matches and more similar to Counter-Strike and Valorant, where deciding what to buy between rounds is a major part of the experience.
It should still feel familiar to longtime CoD players, though, with the devs describing Collateral as being “designed for fans of Search and Destroy and those from the more competitive community.”
