Peter Cullen, one of the earliest voice actors to perform as Mario, and the iconic voice of Transformers' Optimus Prime, has died. Aside from his voice being highly recognizable as Transformers' Optimus Prime, the Canadian voice actor was prolific, appearing in TV, movies, and games throughout his career in enough roles that most people have probably heard his voice at some point.
Peter Cullen's career spanned six decades, with the actor's first television spot as an announcer beginning way back in 1967. He was nominated for an Emmy in 2011, and won a Lifetime Achievement award from the Emmys in 2023.
Peter Cullen passed away on August 26, 2026, at the age of 85 years old. He was reportedly at his home in Los Angeles when he passed, surrounded by family. His passing will likely hit many hard, due to the wide number of roles he held over the years, making his work an important part of many people's lives. In addition to voicing Mario in one of his very first voiced appearances on Saturday Supercade from 1983-1984, he was also iconic for his work as Transformers' Optimus Prime in the cartoons, games, and feature films, Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, and provided his talents in series like Knight Rider, 1981's Spider-Man, and the animated Dungeons & Dragons series.

Cullen reprised his role as Optimus Prime across 12 different Transformers games published between 2007 and 2016, culminating in Transformers: Earth Wars. His final role in games would also be as Optimus Prime, with his voice used for the character in Fortnite back in 2023. He was also featured as the narrator in 2019's Crystal Crisis, and played Eeyore in games twice, in both 2016's Disney Magical World 2 and in the surprisingly horror-like title Piglet's Big Game. He also joined the series Invincible in 2023 as Thaedus, with recurring appearances through 2026. His voice could also regularly be heard in trailers and commercials over the years, and even as an announcer for the Toonami block on Cartoon Network.

While Cullen didn't have as big of an impact on video games as he did on TV and film, if things had worked out differently, that may not have been the case. Peter Cullen lent his vocal talents to Blizzard Entertainment back in the mid-1990s, when the company began development on a game called Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. The game was set after the events of Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal, and would take the series in a new direction at the time, as it was set to be an adventure game. Blizzard notably partnered with Animation Magic for the project, which had worked on games like the notorious CD-I Zelda games. Unfortunately, Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans was canceled in 1998, so his voice work on the title has never officially been shared.
