The Modern Warfare 4 closed beta is currently underway, with over 115,000 concurrent players on Steam alone tuning in to check what’s new for Call of Duty. However, just a day after it went live, it’s already down by over 50 percent in player count.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the next installment in Activision’s biggest franchise, this time taking us into East Asia as a new Korean War brews. It brings back many recognizable Infinity Ward mechanics and aesthetics, drawing heavily from the original Modern Warfare subfranchise across its menus, gameplay, music, and everything in between.
Naturally, as with any Infinity Ward CoD, players started flocking into the closed beta, which is currently reserved only for those who pre-ordered the game or got lucky enough to get an access key. Even so, over 115,000 concurrent players were in the game yesterday during peak hours, but that number quickly dwindled.
As of this article, the beta has just over 44,000 concurrent players, while it peaked at 49,706 concurrents overall on Sunday. On its Steam page, the beta has a 49 percent positive review score, or a “mixed” review rating, with most of the top complaints saying that this CoD just isn’t new enough.
However, I’ll play the devil’s advocate here and say that that argument’s been washed out completely. CoD is a franchise—an annual series, in fact—so differentiation between new installments was never going to be huge. Either way, it’s still prevalent enough of an argument to drive Steam review scores down.
My biggest complaints are the brutally fast time-to-kill that allows no reactions whatsoever and severe server instability, both of which could, I hope, be fixed by the time the game launches. The campaign mission was solid, too, and I cannot wait to see how the game is on that front.
