Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi defended Square Enix's decision to ship the game on discs that require additional data to be downloaded. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8 on all current-gen platforms.
As the climactic bookend of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will see the world established by FF7 Remake and Rebirth open up in new ways. As players explore Revelation's landscape, they will eventually battle dangerous Weapon enemies, including the notorious Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will also see the addition of fan-favorite characters Cid and Vincent to the main playable roster, each bringing their own play styles to the fray.
Despite the excitement around Square Enix's anticipated title, the physical release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on PS5 and Xbox has divided fans due to requiring an additional download. In response to these concerns, the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director stated in an IGN interview that the development team held an internal discussion about what to do with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's physical launch. Though some fans pointed out that physical copies of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth shipped on two discs, Hamaguchi said that the developers chose not to compromise the quality just to get the game to fit on the same disc size as Rebirth. Considering the size and scope of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's open world, it is currently unclear if two discs would be sufficient to contain all that the game has to offer. Hamaguchi acknowledged that this decision was not going to meet the expectations of every player.
Though a single Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc can hold up to 100GB of data, the addition of multiple discs within a single game copy also increases the manufacturing costs proportionately. Hamaguchi said that, while the gaming industry in general is pushing toward digital exclusivity, he still saw value in offering a physical edition to gamers who want one. However, Square Enix stated in its Q1 2027 financial results that digital game sales outnumbered physical copies by a margin of nine to one. The gap between physical and digital sales was anchored by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's launch on Switch 2, along with net sales of Final Fantasy 14 ahead of Evercold's January launch.

However, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will feature additional content that will necessitate a download in the future. Square Enix previously stated that two FF7 Revelation story expansions focusing on Sephiroth and Vincent will launch between Winter 2027 and April 2028. Between the base game and the planned DLC, it is currently unclear how much storage space Final Fantasy 7 Revelation players must set aside.
Given that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the end of a long journey that began with the game's first reveal at E3 2015, excitement around Square Enix's blockbuster title remains at a fever pitch. Though FF7 Revelation will also launch digitally on platforms such as Steam, time will tell how many players will still pick up a physical copy of the game.
