There’s more to How to Fish than just casting your line and catching different creatures. Knowing how to manage your inventory, what to spend your money on, and a few other basics can make those first few hours go much more smoothly. Some mistakes can also make the first few hours more difficult than they need to be. Here are some useful tips to keep in mind when getting started in How to Fish.
The game asks you to collect Clams and feed them to the Lighthouse Keeper during the tutorial, but you can keep doing this after finishing it. This is worth remembering since Clams are one of the easiest ways to make money early in the game. They respawn, and each Clam gives you $1.
After catching a fish, it stays attached to your fishing rod until you release it. Instead of dropping it near the water, carry it toward the middle of the island first. Once released, the creature will try to make its way back into the water. Dropping it farther inland gives you more time to catch up to it and punch it to death before it gets away.
Inventory space can become a big problem, so buying more slots should be one of the first things you do after reaching the second island. The shop there sells an extra slot for $5, but you can only buy one from that shop. The next slot is available on the third island. Make sure to check the shop whenever you reach a new island, as you will find new weapons, tools, and other useful items there.
If you are playing solo, don't waste your $25 on the Brass Knuckles. They most likely won't be enough to take down the Spider Crab, so I recommend saving your money and buying the Knife for $45 instead.
Instead of spending your time catching fish and wandering around the islands, make sure to talk to the NPCs you find. Their quests give you a better idea of where to go and what to do next, which can save you from running around trying to figure out the next step.
The environment can be useful during some of the tougher fights in How to Fish. There are objects around the islands that can give you some cover and make certain fights much easier. During the Spider Crab fight, for example, I used the bench where the Lighthouse Keeper sits as cover. I could stay on one side of it to avoid getting too close to the Spider Crab, then run around to the other side whenever it came after me.
