Whenever I start a new JRPG, I dive in with an open mind, whether it comes from a famous studio or an indie developer. Even if the overall work isn't entirely engaging at times, I can always find a feature or two that genuinely piques my interest, whether through its execution, creativity, or sheer innovation.

Another thing I love is seeing a feature I am passionate about get reused in modern titles, refined and upgraded to get me even more excited. A prime example would be the Skits from the Tales of series, which become better, more intimate, and more polished with every new installment.

With that in mind, I have gathered 8 features that I would love to see implemented across more JRPGs. None of these are mandatory or strictly necessary to make a game great, but whenever I see a title offer them, it easily puts a smile on my face, and I know I am going to enjoy the experience that much more.

It's worth mentioning that I view these features as extra bonuses rather than core mechanics inherent to the base gameplay loop.

Difficulty Levels

I will gladly defend the idea that every game needs difficulty options. I am married, I am a father, and even though I work with games, there are times when I just want to breeze through a title to experience its story, either because the gameplay isn't clicking or because the battles are taking too long. However, I am bringing up difficulty settings with the other side of the coin in mind.

I love it when JRPGs offer harder difficulty settings and actually reward the player for tackling them. Take Tales of Berseria, for instance. If you play on higher difficulties, weapons dropped in battle can roll with far more powerful enhancements. On top of that, the game features Potentites, which are items that grant passive buffs just by sitting in your inventory. Many Potentites only activate their effects on Hard or higher, making the experience far more dynamic.
