Rockstar Officially Discusses GTA 6's Open-World Map of Vice City

Open-world games have gotten very good at giving players somewhere to go, but getting them to actually care about those places is a different challenge. A huge map can provide hundreds of locations and still feel strangely empty once the initial novelty wears off. Rockstar Games has spent years pushing against that problem, with games like Red Dead Redemption 2 making travel itself feel like part of the experience instead of simply something players endure between missions.

Grand Theft Auto 6 appears to be taking that philosophy even further, especially as Rockstar expands beyond the familiar streets of Vice City. Leonida is not simply a larger version of Grand Theft Auto 5's Los Santos, but a broader setting built around multiple regions, communities, environments, and cultures. Vice City remains the centerpiece, but places like the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park give GTA 6 considerably more ground to cover (and considerably more reason to leave the city).

The challenge, according to Rockstar, is making sure players actually experience that world without turning the story into a guided tour. As Rockstar Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries explained in an interview with Game Informer:

“Part of the job of the game's story is to bring the player around the map in a way that feels authentic and interesting. We don't have time to take you everywhere, but we want you to be able to explore and get a feel for most of the places, cultures, and vibes.”

GTA 6's story seems designed to introduce players to Leonida naturally, while leaving enough of the world outside the main path for exploration. That's easier said than done because GTA 6's map is already huge, even by Rockstar's standards. Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut described Leonida as the company's biggest map “by some degree,” with the world measuring around twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5's map. The scale alone is not what Rockstar seems most interested in, though. GTA 6 has been built around the idea that different parts of Leonida should feel like pieces of the same living place, with the journey between them being meaningful instead of simply connecting one mission marker to another.

Garbut emphasized just how much attention went into that approach, explaining that Rockstar was “obsessed about every part” of GTA 6's world, including its rooftops, alleys, interiors, and everything in between. The goal, he said, was for the new world to become a “cohesive whole” with enough density and handcrafted detail that buildings feel real both inside and out. Combined with Humphries' comments, this suggests GTA 6's open world is not being treated as scenery surrounding the story; the world itself is being used to tell players what kind of place Leonida is.

GTA 6 will still have a main story that moves protagonists Jason and Lucia through the events surrounding their criminal lives, but Rockstar's comments make it clear that the journey is only part of what the open world is supposed to accomplish. Some locations will naturally receive more attention than others, while plenty of Leonida and Vice City will remain for players to discover on their own.
