2026 has been a pretty great year for Metroidvania enthusiasts. With the release of the fantastic MIO: Memories in Orbit, the long-awaited sequel to GRIME, and the more recent and pleasantly surprising Well Dweller, fans of the genre have been eating good. Now joining the Metroidvania scene are former Tarsier Studios developers, who left the team to form their own company, Section 9 Interactive.
Section 9 Interactive's very first game is End of Abyss, a Metroidvania that takes players to an underground compound filled with horrific monstrosities. Clearly drawing inspiration from heavy hitters like Resident Evil and Little Nightmares, End of Abyss takes that inspiration and places it in a Metroidvania format.
After playing through this exciting, albeit short, journey, I was pleasantly surprised at how great End of Abyss truly is. It's not perfect by any means, and it makes some seriously frustrating design decisions, but overall, it's a Metroidvania that fans of the genre should definitely play.
End of Abyss puts players in the shoes of Cel, a combat technician whose mission is to investigate the depths of a mysterious compound. As Cel explores these halls, she uncovers the truth behind the facility and the strange machines that whisper to her from the depths. Cel is not welcomed there, which is evident by the gruesome monsters that constantly stand in her path.
I would be lying to say that the story of End of Abyss is complex and the focus here. Instead of having lengthy dialogue that deepens the story and provides answers, players are left questioning the truth behind the compound and why it's even there throughout an entire playthrough.
The way End of Abyss decides to tell its story is through brief and incredibly cryptic cutscenes with very minimal dialogue. It embraces a mysterious approach to storytelling, often letting the environment do the talking. If you have played Little Nightmares before, then you know exactly what I'm talking about here. This makes sense since most developers of Project 9 Interactive worked on the first two Little Nightmares titles.
